Frequently asked questions.

Who is a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying)?

A Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) is a regulated mental health professional who is in good standing with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). RP (Qualifying) practitioners have completed their formal training in psychotherapy and are authorized to provide psychotherapy while working under the regular supervision of a clinical supervisor. Practitioners with the RP (Qualifying) designation are required to adhere to all CRPO standards and ethical guidelines.

What should I expect in the first appointment?

Your first appointment is a thorough and compassionate intake where we explore what’s been challenging for you, what’s been helping you cope, and what you hope to change. I aim to create a space where you feel at ease to speak openly and at your own pace.

Most assessments take one or two sessions. At the end, I’ll offer feedback on what I’m noticing and discuss possible next steps. If therapy is indicated, we will collaboratively outline a treatment plan, including goals and an idea of what therapy might look like. When something falls outside my scope, I will always provide a thoughtful referral to another professional.

How often should we meet and how long will therapy last?

Sessions are 50 minutes and typically occur once per week, though the frequency can be adjusted depending on your needs and goals. Weekly sessions help build a strong therapeutic relationship and maintain momentum as you move toward meaningful change.

Counselling can be short-term and focused on a specific concern, or longer-term to support deeper personal work. Many clients begin to notice positive shifts within the first 6–8 sessions, while common concerns such as moderate anxiety or depression may take 12–20 sessions. Throughout our work together, we will regularly check in on your progress, revisit your goals, and adjust the pace or frequency of sessions as needed.

Are your services covered by insurance?

Psychotherapy services in Ontario are not covered by OHIP. However, many extended health insurance plans in Ontario provide coverage for psychotherapy services offered by a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying). Coverage varies depending on your provider and the details of your specific plan.

I recommend checking directly with your insurance company to confirm whether they cover services provided by Registered Psychotherapists or RP (Qualifying), and whether there are any limits on session frequency, reimbursement amounts, or annual coverage.

At the end of each session, you will receive a receipt that you can submit for reimbursement.
